these hands.

March 25, 2013

They have never felt a balloon,
or a newborn – these hands,
as the Welcome mat,
to the old, abandoned house still,
has their scratches on it,
as does the face of every man-
every hand they’ve ever held,
don the claw marks and gouges.
Never a tender flower petal,
since – if you look closely,
they still retain bits and pieces,
of anything they have ever had,
to ever let go of,
beneath their torn fingernails.
